It has been a long time since I’ve published an update as I have been somewhat busy with the arrival of the twins. Christos has the complete story of their birth into the world which came at 34 weeks – early as I predicted.
So they arrived just before mid-night on 27th May (Sunday night) and I was discharged on the Wednesday afternoon. The twins had to stay in the NICU until the following Saturday which meant daily trips into UVA Hospital for us all. It was nice to finally get them home. We managed on our own until Mum and Dad arrived on Tuesday 5th June. Since then it has been a daily and nightly ritual of feedings, burping and trying to get some sleep. They are feeding every 3-4 hours but are not in sync as Sofia tends to go longer between feeds than her hungry brother Leo!
Both have grown significantly in one month. Sofia in particular had really skinny chicken legs for the first couple of weeks but now she is a lot more meaty. Big brother Leo was weighed last week and is now a healthy 9lb 2 oz! Their full-term birthday should be 4th July so I can’t imagine how huge I would have been if I had gone full-term. We are not sure how much Sofia weighs right now but probably about 8 lbs as she is a good size too.
Having Mum and Dad here has been such a help. The feedings and baby care seem never-ending and the opportunity for even a 1 hour nap during the day is just bliss. Neither Christos nor I can remember it being this hard with Eleni – we must have gotten used to getting a good nights sleep.
Speaking of Eleni – she has had some trouble adjusting to not being the complete centre of our world anymore and having to share our time. She started pre-school on 11th June so that was a big adjustment for her too. She loves the twins and constantly wants to touch and kiss them – not great when she has a bad cough. She also managed to pick up a vomiting bug somewhere which Mum and I promptly caught so that was not pleasant at all. She looks so big now when we see her with the twins and we just hope that her naughty period is going to be short-lived!
Mum and Dad left for Australia today – they are looking forward to some peace and quiet I bet. Yia Yia Toni arrives later this afternoon to help out for the next month. Eleni will really miss Mum and Dad, but is also really excited to have her Yia Yia come and visit. She understands that Mum and Dad have gone on a plane to “atralia” and keeps talking of Anne, Mark and the kids now – reliving their visit from a couple of months ago. We are hoping for more visitors after Yia Yia – particularly any that will help with twin feedings around the clock! Once Yia Yia has gone, I am seriously thinking of a night-nanny even one day a week so that we can both catch-up on our sleep. Funny, I think I have mentioned lack of sleep in every paragraph so far! But really, the twins are so worth it and bring such joy to us all here. Here’s to their continued good health – and to sleeping through the night really soon!
