January House Update

Well we got back from St Louis fine and headed over to see the house. As we are driving down the road Christos says “they’ve made a mistake – they put the wrong roof on”. Can you believe it? Part of the roof over the front porch was meant to be metal but they put shingles on. Anyway, after speaking with the builder who said the roofers made a mistake (well yes) they are going to change it.

We also met with the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning) man this week. he explained to us all about heat pumps, air conditioners and gas furnaces. So we are paying more to upgrade the system that was spec’ed out. We had to do some upgrading anyway as the standards have been changed – we just didn’t expect to do so much – plus the addition cost was a shock.

On a positive note the “Great Room” or rather “Lounge Room” as we would say in Australia, now has a sliding door. They put the wrong size one in originally and we had to pay extra to get a larger one. Oh well at least it looks nice.

We also finalised the kitchen (again well over budget). It should be great though – we have chosen white Shaker style cabinets with a pebble grey countertop. We are now busy chosing faucets (ie taps). These things are soooo expensive. I am not a detail person but Christos is and has been pouring over webpages and magazines to choose just the right ones. He has also done the same thing with the toilet.

So, we think the next stage is the electrics as the plumber was out there this week too putting in various pipes etc. We are going to be having well water and we wanted to make sure the water pressure would be good. Seems that it will not be as good as the town water system but he will do his best for us.

We are hoping the front deck will be finished next week. It will be a white vinyl rail system that is low maintenance. Then they just have to fix the roof and the front deck should be done.

Well that is all for now.

Christmas 2005 & New Years Eve

Eleni, Christos and I enjoyed Christmas in St Louis, MO, USA. We drove here from Charlottesville stopping off at Lexington, Kentucky overnight. The trip took us through Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and then Missouri but we basically stayed on the same highway (I64) the whole way as it runs right by our house and almost delivers us directly to Christo’s parents’ house in St Louis. The trip was long but event-free and we arrived Friday 23rd December.

We had a dusting of snow on Christmas morning but since then it has been really mild. Eleni has been spoilt by her Grandparents (Papou Lou and Yia Yia Toni) and has had a ball with her four (male) cousins – George, Christos, Panagiotis and Elias. From Santa, Eleni received a toy bull-dozer (with a female driver and two boulders) and she received lots of toys and clothes from her relatives here as well.

Apart from numerous shopping trips and visiting relatives, one of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the St Louis zoo – the penguin house was great as were the African animals – they even had a couple of wallabies and kangaroos.

For New Years Eve we went to Elaine’s house (Christo’s sister) – after the football of course as Raiders were playing their last game of the season (don’t ask the score – Christos is still depressed). As usual the food was excellent and we enjoyed another late night. The Politis family are all night-owls and the earliest we have been to bed has been about 11pm!

We head back to Charlottesville later this week. Eleni is an excellent traveller and has a nice new car seat (facing forward). We have had a great time here but are looking forward to getting back and seeing the progress on the new house.

Happy New Year!

Announcing A New Addition to the Family

Well, this is how Tony got the family’s full attention when he announced his engagement to Julie Heather. Yes – everyone thought that she was pregnant but no, they have finally decided to tie the knot.

It all happened at about 8.30pm on Wednesday 28th December at Mooloolaba Beach, (at the southern end near the spit). They had enjoyed a nice dinner at the See Restaurant, Mooloolaba Wharf: Lobster Mornay & Seafood Pasta. Tony was sitting next to Julie on the beach when he asked, but she insisted he get on his knee. Did she cry? No – Tony says she wanted him!

Julie says it was the best day of her life and that Tony did really well with the ring. She loves it and it fits perfectly. Apparently he did all sorts of research on the diamonds and yes, it looks gorgeous!

Julie and Tony first met at Miranda RSL, when Tony was about 20-21 yrs old. They saw each other from time to time but did not start going out until 9th April 2000. This was after meeting up at the famous Carmen’s Nightclub in Miranda. Things moved quickly as Tony met her parents early. Julie’s Dad, (Gary Heather), said that she could “at least pick up someone who shaves”. They did not believe that Tony was actually older than Julie.

They went out a few times, and then Julie told Tony of her previous plans to go to Perth for about 6 months. Tony decided this was a great idea and convinced her that he should go along too. Tony says he thought he would give WA a go plus he wanted a change from Sydney – WA had a bit of mystery. He had just finished uni (Marketing) and his confidence was high. he arrived at Perth Airport on 21st June 2000 and Julie was there to greet him. They went straight to Freo, to a fish and chip shop on the Fremantle Harbour. He says “Sitting there, I realized that I did not know if she was a “salt girl”, and started to feel that maybe I was a little crazy. From there, the rest is history.”

Julie is a fantastic person and all of us are so excited and happy that she will now formally be part of the family. We are waiting for the date to be set and can’t wait for what is sure to be a really fun wedding. Congratulations to Tony and Julie.

PS – Other interesting things about Julie:

She calls Tony “Anthony”
She hates needles and actually has dental work without any numbing.
She can whip Tony at tennis.
She works in Real Estate.
She is a dab artist.
