Happy Australia Day

Today is Australia Day and for those that don’t know the history here is an introduction:

Captain Arthur Phillip was sent by the British government to set up a new settlement in Australia. His ships carried convicts and soldiers. Local Indigenous Australians watched from the hills of what is now Sydney Cove as he took possession of the colony of New South Wales on 26 January 1788. He was the first Governor.

The fledgling colony soon began to celebrate the anniversary of this date. The famous historian Manning Clark notes that in 1808 the ‘anniversary of the foundation of the colony’ was observed in the traditional manner with ‘drinking and merriment’.

Unfortunately there will be no drinking for me this year – just the merriment part. Still there are 19,973,170 Australians who will no doubt make up for me.

A POM in the Family

Well it is official. I have been ‘accepted’ by the Home Office as a person worthy of British citizenship and will shortly be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony. But don’t worry – I am still an Aussie at heart. The dual nationality allows me to work in EU countries and most importantly, take the fast lane at customs whilst Christos has to wait with the other aliens. It will also mean more options (education and work) for our new baby should he/she want.

Unlike the the US there is no test – just filling in some forms, proof of income, ability to speak English and two referees. US citizenship is next – but I have to have lived in the US for a number of years before I can apply. The baby however will be able to get it straight away. So we will be truely a multi-national family.
