America the Beautiful

I was so fortunate that a job opened up for me in central Virginia when I finished my stint in England. We’re at the feet of the Blue Ridge Mountains here in Charlottesville and, outside of the hideous Route 29 commercial corridor, it’s quite beautiful. It’s the current home of Raider Hall of Famer Howie Long and the hometown of the Dave Matthews Band. Last weekend, our good friend JP visited and we went on a short hike just off Skyline Drive. We had purchased a Shenandoah National Park pass earlier this summer and wanted to begin taking advantage of it. We decided on a 3.4 mile roundtrip hike to the 42 ft Jones Run Falls in the Loft Mountain Area.

It was our first time out on a trail and, with Eleni in a Baby Bjorn, we didn’t want to over do it. The trail was surprisingly steep and was a pretty good work out for us geezers, especially the uphill return hike. Thankfully, it was a gorgeous, cool afternoon. Got to buy an aluminum framed backpack to hold her for future trips though. And maybe something to repel the bears. At work this past Friday, we were all sent an email warning that a black bear was wandering around the back gate to our facility.
