Tomorrow is D-Day + 60
. I took this picture from my visit to Normandy last year. It’s of Omaha Beach, the bloodiest of the landing beaches. You can see how wide the beach is and how commanding the view is from the hilltops, where German batteries were unloading on American troops. Official figures never were published with the number killed on D-Day, but after scouring records, experts now say that the number of casualties at Omaha Beach was near 5000, with at least two thirds of that number being KIA. That’s mind boggling. The opening scene from Saving Private Ryan
was incredibly close to the truth. This may be the last big anniversary for veterans who were there, as the youngest are around 80 years of age. May their heroic deeds never be forgotten.
