blenheim palacenobody pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except for all other forms that have been tried from time to time.

that quote is from winston churchill. chris matthews writes in praise of him in his recent book, now, let me tell you what i really think, which i have out on loan from the jp library. very good read on many things besides democracy and churchill: al gore, reagan, dubya, tip o’neill, clinton, and even the hideous so-called ‘sport’ of bull fighting is covered. matthews has a blog that’s worth checking out as well. while i’m on the subject of the great w churchill, i must mention that i visited his birthplace in july, blenheim palace. impressive place with a great park and gardens, but it still bothers me a little to see all the money spent on royalty and lavishness in this country. they’ve been squawking loudly about the soon-to-be-built princess diana memorial in hyde park here because it isn’t loud, audacious, or significant enough. i guess they want another hideous money pit like the prince albert memorial. don’t these people understand subtlety and class without gaudiness? (though i think i like the runner-up more…the water dome in the lake).
